Vintage Travel Wedding

Have you and your beau been bit by the travel bug? Then maybe a travel themed wedding is the way to go. I love the vintage spin with this fun travel wedding from Meet The Burks. With vintage suitcases, cameras, and old National Geographic issues, it’s easy to create some eclectic centerpieces and details to tell your love story.

My husband Ryan and I decided to go with an antique travel theme for our wedding because we have a great passion for traveling the world. In fact, within the first year us dating (over 5 years ago), we studied abroad/lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina for 4 months. It was there that we found that not only were we the love of each others lives, but also that we were each others favorite travel companion. I feel that the small details of our wedding represented our love of travel and each other. Luckily, my dad owns an antique shop, so we were able to borrow old cameras, china, maps, suitcases, etc. for the centerpieces/decorations.

For the wedding ceremony, I took a couple of pieces of furniture from my dad’s shop and painted them an antique aqua chalky finish. Then I used them to create a welcome table with a chalk board sign and placed it at the entrance of the venue. My girlfriends and I made program fans for the guests because it was SO hot, and we painted mason jar mugs with squares of chalkboard paint as wedding favors at the reception. As a teacher, the DIY part of the wedding was really fun for me.

Our seating chart was a map of the world and each table was a different place where Ryan and/or I have traveled. We also had the slogan “Home is wherever with you” hung up, along with vintage license plates from states around the U.S. At the bar, we had an antique travel bar displayed. And lastly, for our guestbook, we had antique post cards for guests to write us messages on, an antique typewriter, and a mailbox for them to “send” us their mad-lib marriage advice. Globes and travel-themed trinkets were scattered around. We chose pale aqua, coral, cream, and brown as our colors, which looked nice against the exposed brick of our reception venue.

However, I never could have done it without the help of my amazing bridesmaids. Ryan and I live in San Diego, so it was tough planning the wedding from so far away. It was important that we had it in Wilmington though, because that is where we met and fell in love. It felt like going home. The best part of all the wedding festivities was getting to celebrate our love with all our friends and family from back on the east coast that we don’t get to see very often. We had a HUGE bridal party including all seven of my younger siblings, and Ryan’s two sisters. Whether it was a bridesmaid, flower girl, ring bearer, junior groomsmen, or groomsmen, everyone had a special role in our wedding. That was really important for us…to make sure all our family felt like a part of our special day.
