DIY Brewery Wedding

Choosing a unique location is a big trend for this year, breweries being a fun and popular option. I’m in love with this cute DIY brewery wedding from Keira Lemonis. With the bride wearing a gray gown and tons of custom graphic details, this wedding is filled to the brim with personality!

After 6+ years together, Joey and I wanted to celebrate the life that we had already begun building, and also throw one heck of a party for our friends and families who have shared that journey with us. It was our way of showing our appreciation for their support and encouragement, so every detail became a personal, heartfelt thank you. The overall look that we were going for was charming and quirky, with warm colors, lots of DIY decorations, a few vintage pieces and custom graphics that represented our relationship. We thoughtfully chose music, readings, and art that would eventually come together to tell the story of us.

We knew we wanted to be comfortable and still look like us, only a bit fancier. Joey and his groomsmen wore gray suits with yellow ties and boutonnieres made from pages of a book. As for my dress, I’ve always wanted a very soft, romantic look, so I chose gray as well. My mom and I found a Marchesa gown at Saks Fifth Ave described as “smoke colored”. It was lovely. I had a birdcage veil custom made by Tessa Kim in gray to match my gown, and I purchased a mustard yellow belt with matching hair bow from Etsy. My mustard yellow shoes were J. Crew. I chose a dozen dresses on Modcloth in all different styles and in shades of cream, blush, and taupe. My bridesmaids each picked the dress they wanted to wear and wore matching mustard yellow kitten heels.

Brown’s Brewery & Revolution Hall was the first and only venue we visited and it just felt right. This large, industrial building set in historical downtown Troy was filled with so much character and warmth. Despite the extra square footage, our ceremony was still sweet and personal. Our dear friend quoted lyrics from State Radio’s “Indian Moon” and my father performed “That’s All” by Frank Sinatra.

I’m a graphic designer so the overall look was really important to me. I wanted people to walk in and say “this feels like Joey & Katie”. We went for a vintage chic look with fabric bunting and retro suitcases. My friends, family and I made all of the decorations. I created about a dozen large typographical posters with lyrics from our favorite and we hung those on the walls. I also spent a lot of time designing our monogram to use on the save the dates, invites, and programs. For the centerpieces we used simple planters with glass bottles and in the spirit of our brewery-turned-wedding-venue, we gave our guests custom pint glasses as favors. Our guestbook was one of our old snowboards spray-painted gray with our monogram in the center of it.

One of my absolute favorite moments was when I surprised my husband for our first dance. A little over a year ago, his groomsmen and I secretly planned that we would blindfold him and they would take the stage to play our song “Bloom” by the Paper Kites. Seeing Joey’s face in that moment filled my heart with so much love. As we started to dance, we looked up at the balcony and around the room to see everyone smiling and taking photographs. It was such a sweet reminder of what this day was all about and how lucky we were to be surrounded by our amazing friends and families on that special day.
